The primary focus of my consulting is to help lawyers and law firms work more productively and profitably. I started my career as a human resources executive and economics consultant. I was a business litigator and antitrust attorney for nearly ten years, first at the Los Angeles office of Skadden Arps and then at Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C.
I left the practice of law in 2004 to start my own consulting firm. Rainmaking for Lawyers provides customized consulting and business-building services to the legal profession. I also offer an online rainmaking course called Law Firm University (www.lawfirmuniversity.com) as well career transition services for high-level attorneys who are considering making a career change either in or outside the practice of law. I also speak extensively to lawyers at bar association events and to trade associations whose members work with and hire attorneys.

My consulting and coaching services focus on four areas that are essential to help law firms become productive and profitable: attracting and keeping better clients, improving your visibility, upgrading your website and other marketing materials, and helping you hire lawyers that will fuel your growth.
Client retention services include helping lawyers set and communicate fees, increasing fees and making them stick, and responding to client complaints about fees and other sources of dissatisfaction.
Marketing-related services include acting as your project manager for website projects, hiring and managing designers, SEO experts, copy writing for websites and other marketing materials, ghostwriting blogs, and all aspects of improving the marketing effectiveness of presentations, ranging from topic and venue selection, drafting the speech, collateral materials, and improving its delivery.
Relying on my more than 20 years of experience dealing with human resources issues, I also help law firms make critical new hires. This typically involves working with senior attorneys to define the key position requirements, drafting online and related postings, reviewing resumes, conducting screening interviews, identifying finalists for face-to-face interviews, and participating in those interviews.
I can work with clients both face-to-face and through email and phone. Most of my consulting work is handled on a fixed-fee project basis. My coaching is usually though not always handled by phone and email.
I speak on business-development topics as well as elimination of bias, the ethics of legal advertising, and other subjects that qualify for CLE credit.
When speaking to non-lawyers, my presentations focus on how to hire and work effectively with attorneys.

Clients range from coaching solo practitioners to individual lawyers at AmLaw 200 firms. The typical coaching client has at least eight years of experience. Typical law firm clients have between three and 30 attorneys.
For speaking engagements, typical clients are bar associations or law firm alumni associations. When speaking to non-lawyers, a typical audience is a trade association whose individual members hire lawyers or are often involved in litigation.
|
| |
My consulting services focus on the legal profession. This includes helping individual lawyers grow their book of business as well helping law firms, departments and practice groups improve their business development and client retention.
I speak to both lawyers groups such as bar associations and law school alumni associations as well as business groups whose members interact with and hire attorneys.
