The Firm was founded in 2001 by Nancy G. Henderson and Kristen E. Caverly as Henderson & Caverly, LLP with a focus on estate planning, trust administration and probate, estate and trust Litigation, civil litigation and intellectual property law. The Firm soon earned a reputation as a premier provider of legal services and a desirable alternative to the higher-priced large law firms.
In 2007, Maria K. Pum left White & Case LLP to join the Firm, bringing with her over 20 years of experience in corporate workouts, insolvency and bankruptcy, as well as in commercial litigation and commercial transactions. A year later, Jack G. Charney and Philip J. Sullivan joined the Firm from Luce Forward cementing the position of the Firm as the pre-eminent law firm in the San Diego area for estate planning and related practice areas. At this time, Debra J. Vella was elevated to partner as part of the Estate Planning Group.
The growing reputation of the Firm attracted other well-known practitioners. In 2010, the Firm gained the talents of Shirley L. Kovar to expand the Firm’s estate and trust litigation practice, as well as the capabilities of J. Clancy Wilson and W. Alan Lautanen, who maintain a robust tax controversy practice involving tax litigation, audits and administrative appeals.
