Our practice of family law focuses on the areas of custody, support (child support and spousal support) and property division. We always attempt to mediate each stage of a divorce, considering litigation as a last resort. There are numerous methods of alternative dispute resolution that we can test as methods to resolve disputes out of court rather than to litigate issues. Of course if all else fails, we will aggressively litigate unresolved issues as advocates for our clients. Our specialty is property division and investigation of income and assets, based on Nancy Bickford’s strong business background and her credentials as an MBA and a licensed CPA. For more details on every area of our practice, visit our web site at www.bickfordlaw.com.

Custody–At the onset of a case we meet with clients to discuss their children’s needs and custody-related matters. We guide them through the custody mediation process mandated by San Diego County Courts. This is a complex process and we work closely with our clients, understanding that the well being of their children is their most important concern. Child/Spousal Support–While entering factors into a support calculator and calculating support may be an easy process, determining a parent's true income can be very complex, especially when one parent is self-employed. Given Nancy Bickford’s credentials as an MBA and CPA, our firm is better qualified than many to sort through these complex income issues. Property Division–This consists of identification, characterization and valuation of properties and debts as either community or separate property. When there are no disputes over property, the process is quite easy because in California we divide community assets and debts equally. When there are disputed separate property claims and tracing claims to separate assets or debts, this analysis can become quite complex. Our firm works with clients and experts to sort through these issues. Mediation v. Litigation–The purpose of mediation is to assist clients and spouses to make their own decisions about their divorce because they know better than any judge how to resolve their situation, share their children and divide assets. We can assist them in understanding their legal position, and to articulate property claims, reimbursements, tracings, etc. in preparation for mediation. In mediation, ultimately the client and his/her spouse make the final decisions in their divorce. While we are successful in settling most of our cases by mediation, negotiation, or other forms of dispute resolution, in the rare occasions that we cannot resolve our clients' disputes out of court, we are prepared to be highly aggressive at trial and to have a judge settle the unresolved issues.

While our clients vary greatly, our typical client is a man or a woman living in the North County or San Diego area with family income ranging from $250,000 to $2,500,000 annually, and between 35 to 65 years old. Many of our clients, however, fall far outside this norm. People often ask if we represent more men or women. Over the years, our client representation has been equally divided--50% men and 50% women. Likewise, we are just as likely to represent a supported spouse as a supporting spouse.
